Charles Lutwidge Dodgson died in Guildford, Surrey, England on this day in 1898 (aged 65).
“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be.”
--from ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (1865) by Lewis Carroll
The two Alice books–Lewis Carroll’s masterpieces–are ranked by many as peers of the great adult works of English literature. And despite their riches of "untranslatable" puns, nonsense, and parody, they have been happily translated around the world. The matchless original illustrations by Tenniel share with Carroll’s text the glory of making Alice immortal. READ more here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/…/alices-adventures-in-…/

Berthe Morisot was born on this day in 1841. Her painting 'Summer's Day' is probably the painting she exhibited under the title 'The Lake in the Bois de Boulogne' in the fifth Impressionist exhibition, held in 1880: http://bit.ly/2rdpHDn

Berthe Morisot was a leading and dedicated member of the Impressionists, whose professional artist association was the first to admit women and men equally. As a wealthy middle-class woman, she was not able to access the spaces of urban modernity, such as concert cafés and dance halls, that men often depicted. Her paintings thus reflect the feminine, often domestic sphere to which she was confined. Here, her daughter Julie sits in the garden of Morisot’s winter home in the south of France, near brightly rendered orange trees and a parrot in a birdcage. Morisot was born #onthisday in 1841.

“Yet how strange a thing is the beauty of music! The brief beauty that the player brings into being transforms a given period of time into pure continuance; it is certain never to be repeated; like the existence of dayflies and other such short-lived creatures, beauty is a perfect abstraction and creation of life itself. Nothing is so similar to life as music.

Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, also known as Horace Walpole, was an English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician.
