On this day, 73 years ago, French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea and is believed to have died at that time. On that day, Saint-Exupéry took off in an unarmed P-38 on a reconnaissance mission to collect intelligence on German troop movements in and around France’s Rhone Valley. Author of works like ‘Night Flight’, ‘Wind, Sand and Stars’, and ‘Man and his World’, Saint-Exupéry is mostly known by classic novella ‘The Little Prince’, first published in New York in 1943. The book begins precisely with a pilot being marooned in the desert, a reference to his experience as aviator. Stranded in that desert, the pilot meets a young prince coming from a tiny asteroid where he spends most of his time cleaning volcanoes and pulling out baobab trees.
