Paik was born in Seoul, South Korea, but grew up and lived in Japan, Germany, and, finally, New York. Paik pioneered the use of new media, including video, in art. Take a look at "Untitled (Red Hand)" from 1967. He brought this 19-century Japanese scroll to New York when he moved there in 1964. 3 years later, he made this important work by adding his own handprint to the scroll and illuminating it from behind w ith a flashing light bulb. Traditionally, a Japanese scroll features a red wax seal imprinted by the collector to show ownership. Look closely and you’ll see Paik’s handprint is just above that seal
