The origins of the hole punch date back to Germany via Matthias Theel, where two early patents for a device designed to "punch holes in paper" have since been discovered. Friedrich Soennecken filed his patent on 14 November, 1886, for his Papierlocher für Sammelmappen.

今天（2016/11/14）週一是世界糖尿病日（World Diabetes Day）。
1992年世界糖尿病聯盟（International Diabetes Federation, IDF）為了感謝醫治糖尿病病患的加拿大生理學家 Frederick Banting（11/14/1891 ~ 2/21/1941），決定於每年 Sir Frederick Grant Banting 醫師的生日（11/14）訂為世界糖尿病日。中華民國糖尿病學會的網頁有更為詳盡的來由說明。（http://www.endo-dm.org.tw/dia/exchange/world.asp）

Frederick Banting 在醫學院碩班學生 Charles Best 協助下，從動物胰腺萃取胰島素，發現胰臟的萃取液可降低糖尿病狗的高血糖，以及改善其他的糖尿病症狀。由於胰島素的發現，以及臨床治療糖尿病的傑出貢獻，Frederick Banting 在1923年與 John James Rickard Macleod 分享諾貝爾生理學醫學獎的桂冠榮銜。
胰島素作用多樣且機制複雜，當年的發現未必盡窺全貌。直到1955年英國的 Frederick Sanger 方才完成純化及結構決定， Sanger 也因此成就獲頒1958年的諾貝爾化學獎。
以胰島素研究而榮獲諾貝爾獎桂冠的學者尚有1977年的生理醫學獎得主 Rosalyn Yalow。Yalow 女士與同僚 Solomon Berson 發現長期注射胰島素的糖尿病病患的血中含有某種球蛋白，能與胰島素產生結合。經分析後發現該球蛋白是針對胰島素的抗體。因人體本身自有胰島素產生，因此對胰島素產生抗體相當不可思議。兩位科學研究者將發現以論文投遞期刊《臨床研究期刊》，不過卻遭到退稿。20年後獲頒諾貝爾獎榮銜，Yalow 女士特將當年的退稿信函改在《科學》期刊上發表，自我陶侃。

李筱峰 新增了  2 張相片 。 《燦爛的星辰》停刊聲明 我這個專欄推出至今屆滿一個月，這一個月來我發現讀者很少，反應極為冷淡。我訪問過許多位親友及學生，大多不感興趣。甚至，連原本向我預約準備在年底集結成書出版的出版社總編輯，看了我這個月的「試寫」之後，也建議我停筆。如果讀者冷淡無興趣，而我又必須每天費時去溫習、爬梳龐雜資料才下筆，這對於癌術後的我，確實是無意義的負擔，而且也浪費民報珍貴的篇幅。因此我決定見「壞」就收，從今天起結束《燦爛的星辰》這個專欄。 今天的壽星舒伯特，有著名的「未完成交響曲」，是我喜愛的音樂。然而我這個「未完成」的專欄，卻是情非得已。 感謝民報這個月來容許我自由揮灑；也感謝這個月來每天看《燦爛的星辰》的少數讀友，當然也要請你們包涵體諒！
