9月30日,是一位對臺灣原住民及人類學影響重大的人物 – 伊能嘉矩逝世紀念日。

說起伊能嘉矩先生,可能多數人不知道他是誰?臺灣原住民族群在清代只分生番熟番,伊能嘉矩首度提出較完整的「4群8族11部」分類體系。這樣的分類方式,是全臺灣跋山涉水冒著生病或被獵首的危險跑透透四處踏查才能得到的成果。


1895年臺灣依馬關條約成為日本的新領土,同年11月伊能嘉矩先生來到臺灣成為民政局雇員,學習臺灣在地語言,之後開始展開大規模的踏查之旅,詳細紀錄了各族群的語言、風俗、文化及途中種種經歷,之後集結成《臺灣蕃人事情》及《臺灣踏查日記》,最後150萬字的《臺灣文化志》更是臺灣研究的代表作。

伊能嘉矩豐富的踏查經歷,訂定了「五戒」與「踏查三原則」,成為許多人田野調查時的圭臬。他致力於推廣原住民教育,曾收養過一位泰雅族女孩,女孩後來不幸生病過世,他悲痛萬分寫了一篇悼文刊載於《東京人類學會雜誌》。伊能先生和原住民成為知己,就有如親人一般。臺灣幾乎每個地方都有他的足跡,許多著作甚至成為現代登山客研究古道的資料。伊能先生後來瘧疾復發,於1925年9月30日病逝。

On September 30, 1985 Charles Francis Richter, one of the pioneers of Seismology, a science to which he devoted more than 50 years of his life, died. The surname Richter became famous around the world for giving his name to the first scale used for measuring the scale of earthquakes.

Charles Richter is the primary name of seismology. He and Gutenberg developed a system in order to measure earthquakes that is still used today.
