July 19: Edgar Degas

French artist Edgar Degas was born #onthisday in 1834. Famous for his studies of Parisian ballet, his works captured the quick movements of the dancers. Degas completed this vivid sketch using thinned-down oil paint, allowing the paint to dry swiftly so he could work quickly and precisely. His unique approach to framing subjects and his behind-the-scenes portrayals of dancers recreated both the glamour and the grit of the ballet. Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do.
Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.
