Alles Gute zum Geburtstag Richard Strauss!
Born on this day in 1864, Strauss wrote several operas and tone poems that Leonard Bernstein conducted at landmark moments in his life.
On the afternoon of Bernstein's debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1943, he conducted Strauss's "Don Quixote", and in 1968, he conducted "Der Rosenkavalier" during his first performances with the Wiener Staatsoper. Bernstein also devoted an entire Young People's Concert to Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra".
To celebrate, we share with you an excerpt from Salome, "The Dance of the Seven Veils", on a Deutsche Grammophon recording by Leonard Bernstein and the Orchestre National de France.
