Alfred Philippe Roll studied at École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Taught by several prominent academic painters of the day, he achieved some success during the early 1870s. Late in that same decade, he decided to paint subjects of everyday life and portraits. His personal style subsequently became less romantic and more realistic.
The artist’s 1880 work, A Miner’s Strike (La Grève de Mineurs), established his reputation as one of France’s premier painters, and he was quite successful for the remainder of his career. He eventually became the French government’s official painter and was commissioned to create numerous works—including murals, ceilings, and other building decoration—for governmental buildings.
Roll’s The Funeral of Victor Hugo offers a nighttime view of Hugo’s casket as it rests on a tall and ornately decorated platform beneath the Arc de Triomphe.
Victor Hugo, author of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, was a giant of French literature and beloved throughout France. He died in May 1885 at the age of 83. Forty thousand people spent the night on Paris streets hoping to view his casket as it moved from the Arc de Triomphe to the Pantheon on June 1, 1885. Between two and three million people ultimately observed the funeral procession—the first such reverence ever accorded a celebrity.
