Bede was probably born in Monkton, Durham. Nothing is known of his family background. At the age of seven he was entrusted to the care of Benedict Biscop, who is 674 AD had founded the monastery of St Peter at Wearmouth.

-The Venerable Bede, an English historian and monk of Jarrow, died #OTD 735 AD. One of the great doctors of the Western Church, Bede lived an uneventful life as a monk and scholar at Wearmouth-Jarrow, to which he was delivered as an oblate in c.681 and where he remained until his death.
