    廖文毅先生離世的31週年。
    廖文毅，1910年生於雲林西螺，父母皆為長老教徒，具備現代知識，相當重視子女教育，因此廖文毅高中時便赴日求學，之後又轉往日本、美國，並於1935年獲得美國俄亥俄州立大學化工博士學位。
    228事件後，廖文毅遭陳儀通緝，遂輾轉居住於上海、香港，1949年與謝雪紅等在香港組織台灣再解放聯盟後，於同年的年底前往日本。隔年成立台灣民主獨立黨，以台灣由美軍接管、公民投票決定台灣前途為訴求。之後又於1956年成立台灣共和國臨時政府，並就任大統領一職。
    廖文毅以台灣共和國臨時政府大統領的身分，在國際間宣揚台灣獨立的主張，獲得諸多迴響，甚至還與各國元首並列，受邀參加馬來西亞獨立慶典。不過，台灣共和國臨時政府的活動，雖然盛況一時，卻也逐漸產生問題。先是內部的紛爭與歧異增加，後是國民黨的打壓策反，都讓台灣共和國臨時政府的力量日漸消散衰退。
    1965年，廖文毅接受國民黨的策動返台。除了考量母親年事已高外，希望解救因台灣民主獨立黨一案遭捕叛處死刑的姪子廖史豪、部下黃紀南也是原因之一。陳慶立在《廖文毅與理想國》一書中，以「親情、財產、官職、健康、救人」作為廖文毅返台因素的總結。
    廖文毅回台後備受監視，也少與外界互動。曾被任命為曾文水庫建設委員會副主任委員、華南銀行常務監事，也曾參與台中港的建設。不過，其職務多半無實權，個人事業也受到許多牽制，晚年身體狀況又不甚理想，最終於1986年5月9日病逝於台中沙鹿光田醫院，享壽76歲。
    廖文毅可說是台灣獨立運動的先驅，台灣共和國臨時政府在當時有凝聚台灣人的意識、信念的作用。時值今日，其提出的主張，如開羅宣言不具國際法效力、台灣地位未定、以公民投票決定台灣前途等，仍然是台獨運動重要的訴求。

    廖文毅（閩南語：Liāu Bûn-gī；1910年3月22日－1986年5月9日），本名廖溫義，為台灣民族主義者以發表台灣民本主義聞名[2][3]，政治上在二二八事件前主張聯省自治，在事件後開始主張台灣獨立，因此被稱為台灣獨立運動先驅，曾任總部位於日本東京之「台灣共和國臨時政府」大統領，1965年因親友遭中華民國政府威脅，而向中華民國政府投降返台。
    廖文毅父親廖琛（後改名廖承丕）於1895年乙未戰爭之時，曾英勇抵抗日軍[4]，是義軍重要將領。以西螺七嵌功夫聞名於世。
