July 10: Roman Emperor Hadrien, Kem Ley甘磊; Alice Munro, Marcel Proust, Giorgio de Chirico

On this day...

Artist Giorgio de Chirico was born on this day in 1888. From our collection, enjoy the dreamlike atmosphere in "The Red Tower" (1913), resulting from irrational perspective, the lack of a unified light source, the elongation of shadows, and a hallucinatory focus on objects. From 1911-1917, de Chirico's enigmatic works provided crucial inspiration to the Surrealists. Learn more: http://gu.gg/TZAb30dmCzH

On 10 July 138 AD, Roman Emperor Hadrien died in Baiae. Of the many effigies of the emperor Hadrian that have come down to us, this one stands out because of its material, which makes it one of the most remarkable of the Louvre. The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes.
Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.
If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time.

Marcel Proust is a tough read, known for his long, winding prose and many ruminations on time and the slipperiness of memory. A graphic novel captures the essence of his work beautifully

The author was born on July 10th 1871

"In his younger days a man dreams of possessing the heart of the woman whom he loves; later, the feeling that he possesses the heart of a woman may be enough to make him fall in love with her."
--from SWANN'S WAY (1913)

The complexity of things - the things within things - just seems to be endless. I mean nothing is easy, nothing is simple.
Memory is the way we keep telling ourselves our stories - and telling other people a somewhat different version of our stories.
Sometimes I get the start of a story from a memory, an anecdote, but that gets lost and is usually unrecognizable in the final story.
