Shakespeare was (supposedly) born #onthisday in 1564, and died #onthisday in 1616. One of the most influential writers in the history of the English language – or any language – Shakespeare’s works are still celebrated today. This engraving was made by Martin Droeshout for the First Folio, published in 1623. It’s one of only two portraits of Shakespeare that can lay a claim to authenticity, even though it’s a crude likeness completed by a young artist. http://ow.ly/2mnP30aZkW5
Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 is engraved on this bracelet, available from our online shop: http://ow.ly/tHJQ30b3cOz

Happy Birthday William Shakespeare!

Even if you’ve never seen a Shakespeare play, you’ll have used one of his words or phrases. Hephzibah Anderson explains his genius – and enduring influence.

J M W Turner was born #onthisday in 1755. In this dramatic watercolour from 1829, Turner depicts how his coach ‘zizd into a ditch’ while he was travelling home from Italy during a snowy January! The artist has also painted himself into this scene – can you find him?

Take a look at "Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight." Here Turner brings the great force of his romantic genius to a common scene of working–class men at hard labor.
What do you notice first? An almost palpable flood of moonlight breaks through the clouds. The light spans the banks of the channel and illuminates the sky and the water. Gradations of light create a powerful, swirling vortex. The heavy impasto of the moon's reflection on the unbroken expanse of water rivals t⋯⋯

Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, also known as Horace Walpole, was an English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician.
