My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends -- it gives a lovely light!

#OnThisDay in 1745 Jonathan Swift dies. In his last will and testament, Jonathan Swift included his own epitaph, carefully specifying that it should be “deeply cut and strongly gilded” into a black marble tablet set “seven feet from the ground.” Translated from the Latin original, the inscription reads:
“Herein is deposited the body of Jonathan Swift, Doctor of Divinity and Dean of his Cathedral Church, where savage indignation can no longer tear at his heart; go traveler and imitate, if you can, one who strove with all his strength to champion liberty.”
